The Prophet said that Allah stated: I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near Me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him. - Sahih Muslim, Book 35, Chapter 1, #6471
--- Heart- Sayings---Sayings of the Heart---If you do not find any sweetness and relaxation in your heart from a (good) deed, then you should suspect your heart. Verily, Allaah is grateful. That is, He must reward the doer of the deed for his deed in this world by a sweetness he finds in his heart, a stronger feeling of relaxation and a joy in his eyes. If the person does not find these things, it means that something has entered upon his deed [and made it not correct and purely for Allah’s sake]. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Madaarij al-Salikeen, Vol. 2, Page 68)
The body’s weakness comes from illnesses, while the heart’s weakness comes from sins. And just as the body does not taste the delights of food when it is ill, the heart does not taste the delights of worship when it is sinful. - Dhun-Nun Al-Misri (The life of this world is a transient Shade, by Abdul-Maalik al-Qaasim, Page 72)
Know that the heart of a person of sound mind cannot be free of sadness, because he remembers his previous sins, therefore becomes sad, he thinks about his negligence, reflects on what the scholars and the righteous have said and as a result he becomes sad for not taking heed. - Ibn al-Jawzi (Disciplining the soul, by Ibn al-Jawzi, Page 69)
Never does the servant turn wholeheartedly to Allaah except that Allaah turns the hearts of the believers to him, providing him their love. - Harim b. Hayyan (Siyar A’lam al-Nabula, 4/49)
Yearning for Allah and His meeting is like the gentle breeze blowing upon the heart, extinguishing the blaze of the Dunya. Whosoever causes his heart to settle with his Lord shall be in a state calm and tranquil, and whoever sent it among the people shall be disturbed and excessively perturbed. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Al-Fawaa’id)
There is no success, except through Allaah’s obedience, nor might, except through being humble before His Might, nor richness, except by being meek to His Mercy, nor guidance, except by embracing His Light. There is no life, except by earning His good Pleasure, nor delight, except by earning closeness to Him. The heart can neither earn success, nor righteousness, except by being sincere to Allaah and Loving Him, Alone. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Za’aadul Ma’ad fi Hadyi Khariil Ibaad)
What indicates the blackness of the heart are three: Not to find an escape from sinning, nor a place for obedience to occur, nor a haven for the sermon that warns. - Abu Turab an-Nakhshabi (Characteristics of the Salaf by Shaykh Ahmad Fareed, Page 19)
It has been conveyed to me that a time will come when the hearts of the people will become so filled with the love of this world that the fear of Allaah will not enter their hearts. You can understand this if you fill a bag with so much of something that the bag becomes full to the brim; then try to put something else in the bag, and you will undoubtedly find no space to put anything else inside. - Sufyaan al-Thawri (Biography of Sufyaan al-Thawri by Salaahud-Deen ibn Alee ibn Abdul-Maujood, Page 146)
I fear for you a Fitnah that is like thick smoke, wherein a man’s heart will die just as his body dies. - Ibn Mas’ud (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations by Shaykh Muhammed Ismail al-Muqaddam)
There is nothing more beneficial to the Muslim’s heart than to mix with the righteous and to watch their actions, while nothing is more harmful to the heart than mixing with the sinners and watching their actions. - Ahmad ibn Harb (Characteristics of the Salaf by Shaykh Ahmad Fareed, Page 14)
It was said by one of the Salaf, ”Beware of hypocritical fear!” On being asked ”What is hypocritical fear?” he replied, ”When your body is seen to be fearing whereas your heart is not fearing.” (Characteristics of the Salaf by Shaykh Ahmad Fareed, Page 8)
Just as the person who closes his eyes doesn’t see anything even if he isn’t blind, likewise is the case of the heart in relation to the stain of sins which blind the heart so that it doesn’t see the truth. This is the case even if the heart is not blind, like the blindness of the disbeliever. - Ibn Taymiyyah (Al-Eemaan by Ibn Taymiyyah)
Fearing Allah is the source of every good on earth and in the hereafter, and ruined is the heart that knows no fear of Allah! – Abu Sulaiman Ad-Darani (Al-Ihyaa 4/159)
The heart is healthy only when it is functioning contrast to its desires. In other words, desires are the sickness of the heart and opposing them is the cure. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Sins and their Punishments by Ibn al-Qayyim)
If a heart receives advice but it is filled with what contradicts it, there will be no place in that heart to accept this advice. The advice will simply pass over this heart and not be able to settle in it. Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Fawaa’id)
Man might pretend to perform good deeds through the limbs but there might be in his heart this corrupt impurity that leads one to the fire in the end. - Ibn Uthaymeen (Sharh Hadeeth Jibra’eel by Ibn Uthaymeen)
If the heart listens to trivial discourse, there will be no place for listening or understanding the words of Allah. Besides, if the heart is inclined to love others, there will be no room to love Allah, and if the heart remembers others rather than Allah, no place will be found to remember Him, and the same applies to the tongue. – Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Fawaa’id)
When the heart becomes busy with falsehood no place for the truth remains in it just as when it becomes busy with the truth no place for falsehood remains in it. – Ibn Uthaymeen (Bulughul-Maraam, Vol. 5, Page 30)
When love firmly settles in the heart, the limbs will only act in obedience to Allah. - Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (The Key to Paradise by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, Page 51)
The greatest of calamities is a hardened heart. – Hudhayfah b. Qatadah al-Mar’ashiyy (Siyar A’lam al-Nabula by Imam al-Dhahabi)
Causes of hardheartedness include: Turning away from Allah, and not reading the Qur’an; being preoccupied with this world and focusing mostly on it, and not paying attention to matters of religion, because obeying Allah, makes the heart soft and brings one back to Allah. The remedy for that is to turn to Allah, repent to Him, remember Him a great deal, read the Qur’an a great deal, and do acts of worship, as much as one can. - Ibn Uthaymeen (Fataawaa Noor ala al-Darb by Ibn Uthaymeen, 12/171)
The more looks follow one another, the more the heart becomes attached, like water with which a tree is irrigated. If too much water is given the tree is damaged. Similarly if glances are repeated that undoubtedly corrupts the heart. If the heart is exposed to this problem, it will turn away from what it has been commanded and the person will be faced with problems which will inevitably lead him to commit forbidden actions, and his heart will be destroyed. The reason for that is that the one who looks enjoys looking the first time, then he wants to look again, like eating delicious food, when he takes the first bite. But if he had lowered his gaze from the outset, his heart would be at peace. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Rawdat al-Muhibbeen, Pages 94-95)
Our hearts were covered with three seals, and verily, the slave will not reach certainty [in faith] until these seals are removed: delight in what is there, sorrow for what has been lost, and rejoice by receiving praise. When you are delighted with what you have, you are a tightwad. If you grieve for what has been lost, then you are an outraged person, and such a person will taste the torment. If you rejoice when you are praised, then you are proud, and the proud will have their actions annulled. - Ibrahim Ibn Adham (Al-Ihyaa 4/236)
Clear your inner self from the love of this world and running after it. Increase in the remembrance of Allah the Most High. When the purification of your inside is completed then Allah the Most High will make you speak with wisdom and you will become the wise man of your time. - Shaykh Ahmed Fareed (The Characteristics of the Salaf by Shaykh Ahmed Fareed, Page 81)
Trusting in Allah in word only is totally different from trusting in Him with the heart. It is the same as repentance with the tongue while having the intention to commit sins again, and the repentance of the sincere heart even if the tongue has not said anything. For the statement of the servant: ”I have put my trust in Allaah” with the intention of something else in his heart is like the statement ”I have repented to Allah” with the intention of committing sins. - Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Fawaa’id, Page 150)
The heart is healthy only when it is functioning contrast to its desires. In other words, desires are the sickness of the heart and opposing them is the cure. – Ibn al-Qayyim (Sins & their Punishments by Ibn al-Qayyim)
Without doubt, the sincere person has tasted the sweetness of his worship for Allah, this is what stops him from performing worship for other than Allah, sincere there is nothing more sweet or more blessed for the heart than the sweetness of Emaan in Allah the Lord of the worlds. - Ibn Taymiyyah (al-Fataawa 10/215)
Fitnah continues upon the heart, except if the Deen of the slave is completely for Allah. - Ibn Taymiyyah (al-Fataawa 10/545)
The heart will not find complete happiness except by loving Allah and by striving towards what is dear to Him. It is not possible to achieve this love except by rejecting all things that compete with it. This is what the words, ‘There is no god but Allah’ mean; this is the spirit of the deen of Ibrahim and of that of every other Prophet. - Ibn Tamiyyah (Majmu al-Fatawa, Vol. 28, Page 32)
Both this life and the Hereafter are in the heart just like the two sides of a scale: whichever is heavier will overweigh the other. - Awn bin Abdullaah (Tazkiyyaatun-Nufuus, Page 129)
Imprisoned is he whose heart is imprisoned from Allah. Captured is he who is captured by his desires. - Ibn Tamiyyah (al-Wabil, Page 109)
The one who wants to have an enlightened heart should eat little. - Abu Imran al-Juni (al-Jami, Page 519)
Allah has created love in the hearts of the servants. When they love Him, He loves them back as a reward for their love. - As-Sa’di (Fath-ur-Rahim, Page 49)
The people with the softest hearts are those with the least amount of sins. – Makhool ad-Dimishqee (az-Zuhd by Imam Ahmad, 463)
Many people think that being punished [for one’s sins] is only in those things that are external, like the body, wealth and children, but the reality is that the punishment of the sickness of the heart and its corruption is more severe and greater than the punishment through those things. – Ibn Uthaymeen (Ahkaam minal-Qur’aanil-Karim, Vol. 1, Page 87)
Indeed the heart that loves Allah, loves being exhausted and exerting itself for Allaah – verily Allaah’s love is not acquired through comfort/relaxation. - Muhammad ibn Nu’aim al-Mowsilee (Majmoo Ar-Rasaa’il al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, Vol. 3, Page 327)
The slave will not experience the sweetness of faith, nor the taste of truthfulness or certainty, until all of the jaahiliyyah exits his heart. – Ibn al-Qayyim (Madaarij as-Saalikeen 2/274)
If dogs and pictures prevent the created angels from entering a home, how then would the knowledge and love of Allah, the sweetness of His remembrance, and comfort with His nearness, penetrate a heart already fraught with bestial desires and their images?! – Ibn Taymiyyah (It-haaf al-Anaam by Shaykh Aboo Abdur-Rahmaan Muhammed)
If your love is true, you would feel an aversion for anything that does not remind you of the one you love. How odd! Whoever claims to love and needs to be reminded of his beloved, then his love is not complete! The least thing that shows your love is that you never forget your beloved. – Ibn al-Qayyim (Al-Fawaa’id)
Emaan does not come about by mere wishful thinking and idle desires, rather it is something that takes firm root in the heart and is testified to by actions. - Al-Hassan al-Basree (Iqtida al Ilm al Amal by Al-Khateeb al Baqdaadee, No. 56)
Abu Sulaiman Ad-Daraan was asked while I was present: ”What is is that brings [a person] closest to Allah?” So he cried and said: ”Who am I to be asked this?” [Then he said:] ”That which brings [a person] closest to Allah is that He looks into your heart and [sees that] you do not want from the life and the Hereafter except Him.” - Ibn Abu Al-Hawari (Rawdat al-Muhibbeen by Ibn al-Qayyim)
All blindness [can be tolerated] except the blindness of the heart. - Prophet Sulayman (Hilyat al-Awliyaa 6/141)
Verily, the worldly life and the Hereafter are like a scale in the hearts of Bani Adam, when one side goes up the other will automatically go down. - Awn Bin Abdullaah (Kitaab Dham Ad-Dunya 2/292, by Ibn Abi Al-Dunia)
When the dunya settles in a person’s heart, the Akhirah leaves. - Abu Sulaiman Al-Darani (Al-Bidayah Wal Nihayah 14/150)
