On an autumn's day, walking down the street,
Kicking through the leaves, marching to my inner beat.
Furtive glances at the passersby I meet;
I lower my gaze and look at their feet.

As they see me they open wide their eyes,
Their faces showing suspicion and surprise.
An outsider in society -
Separated by outward piety.

A strange creature to be pitied more often despised.
I don't claim to be knowledgeable or particularly wise;
But, if you ask me, I will tell you -
Hayaa is a virtue.

Morals and guidance sent down from above,
My actions predicated on devotion and love.
The commands of the creator adhered to with faith.
Longing, hoping to see His face.
