I retired
because I know
I will die
Death is known
to everyone else
as an eventual outcome
But it doesn’t register
with depth
no matter how often we’re reminded
It’s hard for many people
to reconcile daily needs
with this devastating certainty
Besides
everyone thinks they’re on to something better
after death, and so they don’t dwell on it.
