If talking and remaining silent are of equal benefit, it is sunnah to abstain, for permissible talking might lead to something undesirable or forbidden, as in fact is very often the case, and nothing matches safety. – Imam Nawawi (Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Qasideen)
Sufyan Bin Husayn said: I mentioned a person in a bad way in the presence of Iyas bin Mu’awiyah and he looked at my face and said, ”Have you fought the people of Sind, the people of Hind, or the Turks?” I replied, ”No”. He said, ”[The Kuffar] of Sind, Hind and the Turks are safe from you but your own Muslim brother is not!” So I never repeated what I said again. (Recorded in al-Bidayah wa’l Nihayah by Ibn Katheer)
Whoever does not guard the slips of their tongue has not understood their Deen. - Al-Hasan Al-Basree (To kill a mocking tongue by Muhammad ash-Shareef)
People who were before you used to hate futile talk. They used to consider everything useless talk except the book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, enjoining good and forbidding evil and seeking one’s living. Could you deny that over you there are appointed angels, honourable angels in charge of you, one sitting on the right and one on the left, writing down all your deeds? Are you not ashamed of yourself that most of your daily deeds have nothing to do with your religion or worldly gains but futile talks? - Ata ibn Abu Rabah (Sifat as-Safwah 2/213)
Some of the people interpreted ‘al-Azla’ (seclusion) to mean that he (a person) is in the company of people so if they remember Allah, he does so with them and if they speak in other than that, he keeps silent. - Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations, by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddam, Page 14)
I found (true) seclusion to be in the solitude of the tongue. - Wuhayb ibn al-Ward (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations, by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddam, Page 14)
No Hajj or Jihad is more difficult than imprisoning the tongue. - Al-Fudayl b. Iyad (The bad consequences of the Tongue by Shaykh Ahmad Zamzami, Page 21)
The one who speaks (much) only waits for Fitnah to occur whilst the one who is silent waits for Mercy to descend. - Yazid ibn Abi Habib (Jami Bayan al-Ilm wa Fadhlihi)
Speech remains as a slave to you, but the moment it leaves your mouth, you become its slave. - Ibn al-Qayyim (Al-Jawab Al-Kafi)
When Imam al-Hasan al-Basree came across a group of people disputing he said: ‘These ones have become tired of worship, speaking has become easy for them, and their piety has diminished, and that is why they talk.’ (Az-Zuhd by Imam Ahmad, Page 272)---One of the Salaf said, ‘I saw Malik silent without speaking. He wouldn’t turn left or right unless he was listening to someone and then he’d give a brief answer to him. He was asked about this and he said ‘Is there anything which will throw people into the Hellfire other than this?’ – pointing to his tongue’. (Tartib al-Madarik)

Use your ears more than your mouth, as you were given two ears and one mouth so that you’d listen more than you talk. – Abu Darda (Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Qasidin by Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi)
Whoever’s speech increases, his errors increase and if his errors increase, his sins will increase and if his sins increase, then Hellfire is more deserving of him. – Umar ibn al-Khattab (Jami Ulum wal-Hikam)
What is surprising is that a person finds it easy keeping away from things like consuming the haram, oppression, adultery, theft, drinking alcohol and looking at the impermisible, but yet he finds it difficult to guard his tongue! It’s such that you’ll see a man who is viewed to be knowledgeable and is an ascetic worshipper but he speaks with words that bring the Wrath of Allah, without giving them a second thought. How often do you see a man who steers clear of evil sins and opression but you see his tongue sever the honour of everyone – dead or alive, and he doesn’t even care about what he says! - Ibn al-Qayyim (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations, by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddam, Page 26)
The expiation for eating your brother’s flesh [i.e. backbiting him] is that you praise him and supplicate for goodness for him. - Mujaahid (Mowsu’ah Ibn Abid-Dunyaa 4/418)
My tongue is a predator; if I let it go it will consume me. - Tawus Ibn Kaysa (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations, by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddam, Page 29)
It is reported that a man came to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and mentioned another man in his presence so Umar said to him, ‘If you wish, we can look into this statement of yours. If you are lying, then you will be from these people: ‘If a rebelious evil person comes to you with news …’ And if you are truthful, then you will be from these people: ‘… A slanderer, going about with calumnies,’ [Al-Qalam: 11] But if you wish, we can forgive you and overlook? So he (the man) said, ‘Forgive me O leader of the faithful, I will never return to it again’. (Selected chapters from the Way out of Tribulations, by Shaykh Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddam, Page 22)
He who remembers death often will be content with little provisions, and he who knows that his words are among his actions, will speak little. - al-Awza’i (Sifatus-Safwah, Vol. 4, Page 258)
If you feel grieved by being silent then remember your salvation from the slips of the tongue. - Ibrahim ibn Adham (Hilyat al-Awliya)----------YOUR BROTHER K.IBRAHIM.-----("O Muslim people please make Dua for Me, That ALLAH increase My Faith(IMAN) and devotion,And grant me a Good Muslim wife, who has knowledge of Din!([email protected])
