Small Kindnesses

It’s a time for joy
For celebration in the west
People are reminded to be on their best
Open their hearts and their hands
And remember the needy
Expose the heartless and isolate the greedy
Bah Humbug!
Surely that’s not the way
But
We especially are taught that there is no one special day
To care for the poor and for the sick pray
No great show of giving just once or twice in the year
To the believer even a smile is so dear
A sip of water to a helpless animal can open heavens gates
Even giving a morsel of food or a plate of dates
The shade of a tree planted
Or water donated from a well
Can be your protection from the fires of hell
A kind word to a child
To you partner a manner mild
The small dua of “Peace be upon you!”
A simple greeting that’s too far between and very few
Roll that stone out of the way, share that prayer book
But
Alas it’s these small kindnesses that we overlook!
