The Call

I heard a call
From the birds of the sky
Before the sun rose
Above the edge of the Earth

I heard a call
In the flight of the birds,
In the early afternoon
Before the sun reached
Its highest possession of the sky

I heard a call
In the span
Of the wings of the birds,
In the latter time
Of a single cycled day,
When the sun began to fall

I heard a call
In the evening
Before the sun sleeps,
When the birds begin to leave

I heard a call
In the absence of the birds’ song,
During the dark depths
Of the night,
When the sun is gone

I heard a call
Summoning me
To lower my wings
Of pride and arrogance,
And I humbly submitted
