The Spring That Never Was

Submitted by : Barqawi on Strugle

I thought the Arab spring was here to stay
That with it Arabs would see a new day

Tunisia sparked a movement so strong
It swept away decades of wrong

Egypt followed with cries of "Down!"
The people want the regime to collapse down!

Syria followed with defiance in the night
They knew they were in for a long fight

Their voices were strong and their demands were clear
We will not acquiesce, and we no longer fear

We no longer fear your shackles and chains
For we have learnt from our sorrows and our pains

We have learnt that freedom does not come cheap
And with courage and sacrifice, freedom we shall keep

Then something happened, something changed
Did I imagine it all, was I just deranged?

Mubarak's gone but now Seesi's here
What happened to not giving in to fear?

Syria was left to fight its own fight
Now I see no end to their war in sight

Tunisia is holding onto a glimmer of hope
We can only pray they hold on to God's rope

The spring is gone, but was it ever here?
Everything is confusing, nothing is clear

Brothers once united now like enemies fight
No one's wrong because everyone's right

Brothers, it is time for us to wake up and see
That we lost when it became all about "me"

We lost when we lost compassion for each other
And helped our enemy kill our sister and brother

I now am a firm believer that a spring is only real
When a brother cares how his brother will feel.
