What are thoughts?

What are thoughts, but echoes of the soul?
A voice more potent than an owl’s midnight call
They often get lost in chaotic abyss
One not quite completed, another gone amiss
Which device or contraption releases them free?
To softly speak, or screech violently
The clarity of some is such, that I almost lose my breath
Like the reminder of a loved one, or the finality that is death
