The impact of modern technological society on the lives of individual human beings has been such as to create a "crisis of humanity" in modern societies. There is increasing awareness in modern technological societies that humanity has taken on a new meaning, and is in some ways changing. But if the meaning of humanity has changed, then it may also be possible to say that this has attempted to altered the relevance of ideas, practices, ideologies and even religions that depend on a certain understanding of what it means to be human. How can that be? Is it possible to not be human? A good place to start gaining an understanding of this issue is with the work of sociologists and historians, who have traced the way that modern bureaucratic and institutional societies have somehow altered the meaning of what it means to be human. An essential ingredient of being human is having a direct connection with the creator of heaven and Earth with and with nature and with the rest of the creation. In the past, human beings lived very close to nature and it was unthinkable to be separate from animals, weather patterns, and other phenomena that are rarely part of "human" life today. Modern humankind has enveloped itself in cities and buildings, living in so many concrete boxes, controlling every feature of temperature and light, in an artificial man-made environment. Most people no longer have a sense of where their food comes from. If people do have any contact with animals, they are for the most part domesticated animals, living in the same concrete spaces, not in the wild. It is possible to say, from Islamic perspective, that the Qur’an presents a kind of human existence that is closer to nature than most people have today. Look at all the many verses that ask human beings to ponder nature, to observe the wonders and signs of creation. Is it still possible to do that today? (yes) But not while living in an air-conditioned house, driving a car, working in an office? (No not in these conditions) Other than using science to "see" nature, which is only seeing it in a limited, quantitative way, many people have lost the ability to see and experience nature for themselves.- In these concrete Jungle people have become dehumanized-- The Quran is relevant in any human situation and in any human condition, and Islam is understood by All who seeks understanding. But it is possible to say that many people have in a sense become somehow dehumanized in these concrete Jungles and disconnected with the real world, with respect to their connections to the rest of Allah’s creation, and that without recognizing this possibility, believers may unknowingly alter their understanding of Islam, or any other tradition, to fit this dehumanized condition. Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam)said: “True enrichment does not come through possessing a lot of wealth, but true enrichment is the enrichment of the soul.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari) In the past, Allah Almighty used to send prophets and messengers to reform and Uplifting the human condition and change the people’s quality of life and better their affairs in this world. Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) was sent by Allah with the universal message to restore the dignity and the integrity of mankind for all times. He (sallallahu alayhi wa salam) is the seal of Prophets whom Allah sent to reform the Human conditions and to uplift the human spirit. The Scholars, however, have inherited this mission, namely reforming and uplifting the human condition, from Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) by virtue of their knowledge and righteousness. They, therefore, have a vital role to play in the process of reform and setting things right in the lives of the Muslim people. Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) unequivocally declared, “Scholars are the heirs of the Prophets”. Scholars thus shoulder the serious responsibility of leading the Muslim people with the help of all faithful intellectuals, thinkers and laymen, to a real change for the better. In light of this proposition, one can reflect on where humanity is now and where it is headed or, and how things got to be in this way that they are. The next logical step would be to ask, where is humanity headed? It seems necessary to clarify something, before proceeding. This discussion is about "humanity," which is a relatively new and unusual term in human history. It is part of the ever increasingly global outlook that many people have been adopting in recent decades. In the past, what one can see as humanity today was most often divided, as in, for example, the term mankind, humankind or people. But the meta-idea of "humanity" supersedes all these divisions, and is perhaps most closely captured when the Qur’an speaks, in many instances, of "insaan" or "naas," (which is related to the Arabic word "forgetful," itself a clue to the Qur’anic perspective about the human nature). In any case, the concept of humanity today implies a common existence and fellowship or shared identity and shared habitation on a single planet, which is fairly new in human history. This is not to say that the various historical, ideological or social divisions are wrong or useless – each is relevant in some way and all are needed for understanding – but it is important to recognize that the idea of a common humanity or one humanity with a shared dignity with a sense of honor and nobility in oneself is in many ways a revolutionary idea that Islam brought to the world, and that this idea transcends the usual divisions based on ideology or ethnic identity. When we say The Quality of Life or Up lifting the human condition! The Holy Quran said (Surah 16 An Nahl Verse 97) (97. Whoever does righteous deeds – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a believer; then we will certainly give them a good life, and we will certainly grant them their rewards in proportion to the best of what they used to do.) This is a promise from Allah to those Children of Adam, male or female, who do righteous deeds – deeds in accordance with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam)with a heart that believes in Allah and His Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) , while believing that these deeds are commanded and enjoined by Allah. Allah promises that He will give them a good life in this world and that He will reward them according to the best of their deeds in the Hereafter. The good life includes feeling tranquility in all aspects of life. It has been reported that Ibn `Abbas and a group (of scholars) interpreted it to mean good, lawful provisions. It was reported that `Ali bin Abi Talib interpreted as contentment. This was also the opinion of Ibn `Abbas, `Ikrimah and Wahb bin Munabbih. `Ali bin Abi Talhah recorded from Ibn `Abbas that it meant happiness. Al-Hasan, Mujahid and Qatadah said: “None gets [this] good life [mentioned] except in Paradise.” Ad-Dahhak said: “It means lawful provisions and worship in this life”. Ad-Dahhak also said: “It means working to obey Allah and finding joy in that.” The correct view is that a good life includes all of these things. As found in the Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from `Abdullah bin `Amr that the Messenger of Allah said: (He who submits [becomes a Muslim] has succeeded, is given sufficient provisions, and is content with Allah for what he is given.) It was also recorded by Muslim. Human beings form the society, and hence human value must lay the foundation for the social value. In other words, those who show respect to human value will be entitled to social value. The great challenge of our time is to uplift the human condition and build and cultivated better sustainable societies--social, cultural and physical environments in which we can satisfy our needs and aspirations without diminishing the value of the human being or our Chances of higher qualities of life for future generations. Muslim Responses to Social Change!
The value of human life surpasses all other values. So scriptures, societies and religions, gain significance only insofar as they develop humanity to the maximum through learning, culture, physical health and economic plenty. It is for the sake of the progress of the human being that civilization has so many institutions of higher learning, What good is these societies or what good is a civilization if people are prevented from manifesting the best in themselves? If they do not get the opportunity to cultivated better sustainable societies -Where they can invigorate their intelligence with knowledge, or to broaden their hearts with love and compassion for others, these kinds of Islamic societies where hopes and aspiration can be fulfilled will lead human beings to the goal of life!
