‘Your Path’ is a Sonnet telling the inner feelings of a man who was born a Muslim but with time became distant from his faith and indulged in many things that corrupted him from within. Now as an elderly man he is deeply regretful and asks Allah to forgive him.


Your Path

On birth I was blessed because I entered your path.
My belief in your mercy and compassion kept me out of the dark.
Through prayer and righteousness I was protected from your wrath.
Your teaching and your guidance in my heart truly left a mark.

Yet how easily I strayed from your path of enlightenment.
Relishing nights of intoxication, awakening in ignorance.
Temptation led me away from you into acts of enticement.
Blinded by momentary passion, seeking to keep you at a distance.

Hot and shameful tears flow down this now withered face.
Dignity, honour and respect have seeped away from within me.
Trapped in darkness, I stand hopeless and full of disgrace.
With this impure heart I utter one final plea:

Don’t let me appear this worthless soul on the day of judging
God keep me under your shade, my heart turns to you begging.
