Allahuma Ameen There is an emptiness in the Hearts of men that cannot be filled except with the love of ALLAH and the Love for ALLAH and by turning to ALLAH and always remembering ALLAH! The Sahabah are all those who met Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) and died as Muslims. Scholars have said that they were 114,000,and some say they were124,000 in number [as stated by Abu Zur'ah, the teacher of Imam Muslim, and recorded by as-Suyootee]. They are praised in many Qur'anic verses: "You are the best of peoples ever raised for mankind, you enjoin good and forbid evil, and you believe in Allah." [3:110] "And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajiroon (the Emigrants from Makkah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madeenah who helped the Muhajiroon) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success." [9:100] "Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave their pledge to you (O Muhammad) under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts and He sent down calmness and tranquility upon them..." [48:18] As Ibn Mas'ood said, "Indeed Allah looked into the hearts of the servants and found the heart of Muhammad Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam)to be the best of the hearts of His servants and so He chose him for Himself and sent him as a Messenger. Then He looked into the hearts of His servants after Muhammad Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) and found the hearts of the Sahabah to be the best of the hearts of the servants. So He made them ministers of His Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) fighting for His Deen. So whatever the Muslims hold to be good then it is good with Allah and whatever the Muslims hold to be evil it is evil with Allah." [Ahmad, at-Tayalasee]
The habits and traits of character of the Sahabah, as a
whole, are the Best to follow, as they were the people
specially chosen and selected by Allah to be the companions(the Sahabah)
of His beloved Nabi (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam).
Rasulallah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) says:
"I have been sent in the best period of human history."
The time of the Nabi (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) was
itself a blessed period, and the people favoured with his
company were really the cream of that age.
In the Days of the Sahabah, They were “Dignified in the company of their friends, praising Allah when they were left alone, content with the lawful gains, grateful when ease of means, resigned when in distress, remembering Almighty Allah among the idle and craving the grace of Allah. When among the pious, such were the Sahabah of Rasulallah(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) their associates and their friends. No matter what position they occupied in life, they were held in high esteem by their companions and when they passed away, their spirit took flight to the blessed companionship on high as the most celebrated souls. O Muslims people, those were our righteous ancestors, but when we deviated from the right path, Almighty Allah too withheld his blessings from us.” The Sahabah were thoes who neither rejoiced when the things of this world came to them, nor grieved when they lost anything in this world. The life of this world was no more insignificant to them than dust. One of them might live for a year or for sixty years without ever having a garment that would entirely cover him, and without ever having anything that would come between him and the ground, and without ever having any food that he could ask to be prepared for him in his own home. When night came, they would be on their feet, with their foreheads flat against the earth, tears rolling down their cheeks, secretly calling on Allah to save them on the Day of Judgement. If they did something good, they never stopped being grateful for it, and they were always asking Allah to forgive them for it. By Allah, they were not safe from wrong actions, and were saved only by their constant turning in repentance. May Allah be pleased with them and grant them His mercy..." The People laugh and yet – who knows? – perhaps Allah has looked at some of our works and said: “I will not accept anything from you.” Woe to you, son of Adam! Can you fight Allah? Whoever disobeys Allah is fighting Him. By Allah! the Sahabah were veterans of Badr. Most of their garments were wool. Had you seen them you would have said they are crazy, and had they seen the best among you they would have said: “Those people will have no part in the Hereafter.” Had they seen the worst among you they would have said: “Those people do not believe in the Day of Reckoning.” They were people for whom this world was cheaper than the dust under their feet. they were people the like of whom would come home at night, not finding more than his own portion of food, and yet say: “I shall not put all of this into my belly. I shall certainly give some away for Allah’s sake.” Then he would give away some of his food in charity, even if he were more in need of it than its recipient. these are the virtues of the Sahabah.
The Sahabah, as a class, were an embodiment of righteousness.
They attained a standard that is rather difficult to
emulate in this modern society or modern world!. We would be fortunate if we
really attain even a partial resemblance to their character.
Some of their qualities are peculiarly their own, and selfsacrifice
is one of these. Allah has made a mention of this
in the Holy Qur'an in these'words.
"They prefer others above themselves. even though
poverty become their lot. (LIX: 9)."
A Sahabi came to Rasulallah(Sallallaho alaihe wasallam)
and complained of hunger and distress. Just then, Rasulallah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) had nothing in hand, or in his home to feed him. He asked the Sahabah: "Would anybody entertain him as a guest tonight on my behalf?"
One of the Ansaar said: "Ya Rasulallah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam), I will do that."
The Ansari took the person to his house and instructed his
wife:"Look here, this man is a guest of Rasulallah(Sallallaho
alaihe wasallam). We will entertain him as best as
we can, and won't spare anything in doing so."
The wife replied:"By Allah! I have got no food in the house, except a
very little-something just enough for the children."
The Ansari said: "You put the children to sleep without feeding them,
while I sit with the guest over the meagre meal. When
we start eating, put out the lamp pretending to set
it right, so that the guest may not become aware of my
not sharing the meal with him."
The scheme worked out nicely, and the whole family,
including the children, stayed hungry to enable the guest to
eat to his fill. It was over this incident that Allah revealed
the verse: "They prefer others above themselves, even though
poverty become their lot
(LIX: 9)."
There are quite a number of similar incidents about the
Sahabah.
It is really very hard for the Muslims of to-day to imagine, and much less to endure or even to attempt to
endure, the hardships that were borne by the Rasulallah(Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) and his illustrious
Sahabah in the path of Allah. Books of history are full of stories of their sufferings. It is a pity that we are
so indifferent to those events and our knowledge is so poor in this regard.. During those golden days, The whole of the Muslim Ummah became one extended family that treated one another like brothers and had the other’s well-being at heart. They became each other’s sympathizers and sincere benefactors. If a Muslim suffered anywhere in the world, the whole Ummah felt his pain and offered their help to solve this problem. With virtues like these they became real true believers and strong Muslims and true human beings in the sight of Allah, and because of these noble virtues He made them the leaders of the world and gave them dominance over all the nations. As Muhammad Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam ) is the last Nabi He chose them for the Divine duty of carrying on his mission of making men true human beings(by following the Islamic way of life) while others made consumer goods, goods for this temporary life only. Only those can make the life of others better who themselves follow the principles of justice and fairness and have the spirit to benefit others. Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) Sahabah were such people. They were selfless and sincere and proved to the world with their deeds that they preferred the welfare and benefit of others even at the cost of their own lives. At the beginning of the fourth year of the Call, and for a period of some months, the polytheists confined their harassment tactics,But on realizing the futility of these procedures, they decided to organize a full-scale opposition campaign. They called for a general meeting and elected a committee of twenty-five men of Quraish notables with Abu Lahab, Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam)uncle, as a chairman. Following some lengthy deliberations, they reached a decisive decision to take measures deemed to stop the tidal wave of Islam through different channels. They were determined to spare no effort, in combatting the new faith. They decided to malign Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) and put the new converts to different sorts of torture using all available resources. It was easy to put the resolutions relating to the new converts who were deemed weak into effect. As for Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam), it was not easy to malign him because he had such gravity, magnanimity and matchless perfection of character that deterred even his enemies from committing any act of folly against him. He had, as well, Abu Talib, his uncle, who came from a noble descent and had an awe-inspiring clan to support him. This situation was a source of great worry to the infidels, but they felt that they could no longer exercise patience or show any tolerance before a formidable power marching steadily to annul their religious office and temporal authority.Abu Lahab himself took the initiative in the new series of persecutions, and started to mete out countless aspects of harmful deeds, hatred and spite against Muhammad Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) . Starting with flinging stones at him, forcing his two sons to divorce their wives Ruqaiya and Umm Kulthum, Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) daughters. The wife of Abu Lahab,Umm Jameel bint Harb, the sister of Abu Sufyan had also her share in this ruthless campaign. She proved that she was not less than her husband in the enmity and hatred she harboured for Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam). She used to tie bundles of thorns with ropes of twisted palm-leaf fibre and strew them about in the paths which Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) was expected to take, in order to cause him bodily injury. She was a real shrew, bad-tempered with abusive language, highly skilled in the art of hatching intrigues, and enkindling the fire of discord and sedition. Abu Lahab and his household used to inflict those shameful examples of torture and harassment in spite of the blood relation that tied them for he was the Nabi’s uncle and both lived in two contiguous houses. Actually, few of the Nabi’s neighbours abstained from maligning him. They even threw the entrails of a goat on his back while he was performing his prayers. He always used to complain about that unbecoming neighbourliness but to no avail for they were deeply indulged in error. Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Ibn Mas‘ud, narrated that once when Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) was prostrating himself while praying in Al-Ka‘bah, Abu Jahl asked his companions to bring the dirty foetus of a she-camel and place it on his back. ‘Uqbah bin Abi Mu‘ait was the unfortunate man who hastened to do this ignoble act. A peal of laughter rose amongst the infidels. In the meanwhile, Fatimah, the daughter of Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam), happened to pass that way. She removed the filth from her father’s back. Rasulallah(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) invoked the wrath of Allâh upon them, especially upon Abu Jahl, ‘Utbah bin Rabi‘a, Shaibah bin Rabi‘a, Al-Waleed bin ‘Utbah, Omaiyah bin Khalaf and ‘Uqbah bin Mu‘ait. It is recorded that all of them were killed in the battle of Badr. Scandal-mongering and backbiting were also amongst the means of oppression that the chiefs of Makkah, in general, and Omaiyah bin Khalaf, in particular, resorted to in their overall process of evil-doing. In this regard, Allâh says : "Woe to every slanderer and backbiter."[104:1]
Such was the disgraceful treatment meted out to Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam) And His Sahabah the great man, respected as he was by his compatriots, with an influential man, his uncle Abu Talib, at his back to support him. If the matters were so with Rasulallah's(sallallahu alayhi wa salam), what about those Sahabah deemed weak with no clan to support them? Let us consider their situation in some detail. Whenever Abu Jahl heard of the conversion of a man of high birth with powerful friends, he would degrade his prudence and intellect, undermine his judgement; and threaten him with dire consequences if he was a merchant. If the new sahaba convert was socially weak, he would beat him ruthlessly and put him to unspeakable tortures.
Were it not for the deep faith and trust in Allah that filled the Hearts of the Sahabahs,They would not have been able to cope with such a difficult situation as existen in Mecca in those days.
This deep faith and awareness had an amazing effect on the lives of The Sahabahs Muslim men and women: it
awoke their consciences and reminded them that Allah (SWT) witnesses and knows every secret,
and that He is with a person wherever he may be.This is the deep sense of awareness that Islam had implanted in their hearts. They were righteous and upright in all their deeds, both in public and in private, because they believed
that Allah (SWT) was with them at all times and saw and heard everything. This is true faith, and
these are the effects of that true faith, which raised their faith to the level of ihsan. This is the pure, deep faith which increases the characters of the Sahabahs in strength,
understanding and maturity,so that they seen life as it really is, which is a place of testing whose
results will be seen on the Day which will undoubtedly come.
