This Business of Living
Submitted by : rosmani on Think
What other hurts
have you lined up for me, O World?
I’ve sorted out my needs
from desires
and pruned them both.
I can meet my needs now
even by sleeping all day
and staring at the ceiling all night
My desires are now in an urn
put in the corner of the living room
next to ashes from memories of other failures
I watch the creeping inevitability
of my own demise; with equanimity
Shrugging off the pettiness in humanity.
There is a calculable probability
of losing loved ones, as they fade away
some with nary a glance my way.
From where I’ve placed myself in life
there now seems to be only upside…
