Excerpt from the book:
"The Garden of the Lovers and the Excursion of Those Who Yearn"
(Rawdatul Muhibbeen) by Imam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, Translated by Khalal Abu Asma

Chapter: Concerning the Desire to be close to Allah and the Signs of winning His Good pleasure and the Signs of the Ones Who Knows Allah. As for the desire of nearness to Allah (raghbah). (lit. His Countenance) and yearning for the meeting with Him, then it is the capital of the slaves, the foundation of their affair, the basis of our life's of goodness, the source of our (true) happiness, success and bliss, and it is the coolness of our eye. For this reason we were created and for it we have been commanded. The messengers have been sent and the books have been revealed also for this purpose. There is no rectification or bliss for the hearts of Mankind unless our desire is solely for Allah’s pleasure, alone, The ALL- Mighty, The ALL-Wise and The Majestic is He. Hence, He alone should be our desire to get near too, what we seeks out and our goal of life. As ALLAH, the Exalted, has said,
"So when you have finished (your occupation), devote yourself for Allah's worship. And to your Rabb turn your desires and intentions"
(Quraan 94:7-8 ).
And He, the Exalted, has also said,"Would that they were contented with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and had said, 'Allah is sufficient for us. Allah will give us of His Bounty, and so will His Messenger. We implore Allah'"
(Quran 9:59 ).
Those who desire are three types:
Those who desire the Nearness to Allah,
Those who desire Allah’s Good Pleasure and those who desire other than Allah’s Good pleasure.
So the lovers of ALLAH and His Din is the ones who desires nearness to Allah. The ones who is concerned with works is the ones who desires Allah’s Good pleasure in this world and the Hereafter. And the people who are satisfied with this life, in neglect to the Hereafter, are the people who desires other than Allah’s Good pleasure.
. The people whose desire is for the nearness to Allah alone, Allah with suffice them from every concern, take on all of their affairs, deflect from Them what they are not capable of deflecting from themselves. , protect them better then the protection of a father to his child and preserve them from all afflictions. And whoever prefers Allah to all others, Allah will prefer them to others. And whoever seek closeness to Allah, Allah will be close to them where they are not even there for their own selves. Those Who knows Allah, nothing will be more beloved to them than He is to them and no desire will remain in this type of people for anything other than His good pleasure, except that which will bring them even closer to Him or that which will assist them in their wayfaring toward Him.
From among the signs of experiential knowledge (maârifah) of Allah is veneration and awe (haybah). As the slave's experiential knowledge of Their Rabb increases, so to does our veneration and awe increase. As Allah, the Exalted, has said,
"It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah"
(Quran 35:28 )
meaning, those who are knowledgeable concerning Him. And Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) , said,"I am the most knowledgeable of you concerning Allah and I am the most intense in awe and reverence of Him"
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

So those who knows Allah (has maârifah) Their livelihood will be pure, their life will be sweet, everything will revere them and all fear of created things will leave them. They will find intimacy with Allah and will have an aversion for (common) people. Knowledge of Allah (maârifah) will bequeath to them shyness in front of Allah, veneration and reverence of Him vigilance (concerning His vision), love, trust in Him, turning to Him, pleasure in feeling his presence and submission to His will and ordinances.

It was said to Junayd, may Allah have mercy upon him, "There are a group of people here that claim that they can attain righteousness by leaving all movement." He responded, "Such ones have spoken of the removal of all action, and this is something very immense. The one who fornicates and steals is in a better state than the one who says that (as far as I am concerned). For verily, those who have experiential knowledge of Allah (the ma'arifa) have taken their actions from Allah and they have returned to Allah in obedience. If I were to live one thousand years I would not decrease in performing righteous works." He also said, "The Ones who knows Allah does not really know Allah until they becomes like the earth; the feet of the righteous and the feet of unrighteous tread upon them. And (until they becomes) like the rain that waters what it likes and what it doesn't like."

Yahya ibn Muadh said, "The ones who knows Allah leaves this world (at the time of death) and they have not had their fill of two things: crying over Their sins and yearning for his Rabb." Others have said, "The Ones who knows Allah will not really know Allah until if they are given a dominion like the kingdom of Solomon it would not distract Them from Allah for even the blink of an eye." It has also been said, "The ones who knows Allah has found intimacy with Allah and has an aversion for other than Him. They have realized their poverty in front of Allah, so Allah has enriched Them from His creation. And They have humbled themselves in front of Allah, so He has ennobled them amongst His creation. We are talking about none other than the believing Muslim people!

Aba Salyman Ad-Daanar said, "While (resting) in bed, the ones who has experiential knowledge of Allah has openings that do not even come to the ones who is standing in prayer!"

In summary, the life of the heart is with Allah and there is no life for it without that, ever. So when the heart is in agreement with the tongue in its dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and the heart is in agreement with what the Beloved wants from it; when he (the servant) belittles the many works and statements that he has made and regards even Allah's subtle generosity and kindness as great; when he embraces obedience and leaves off disobedience, and has left all of it for the sake of his Beloved ALLAH!, So that nothing of it remains; when his heart has become full with reverence, awe, preference and pleasure in Him and his patience in yearning to be near to ALLAH has reached its last straw; when he cannot find repose except in His remembrance, desire for Nearness and yearning for the meeting with Him; when he cannot find (true) intimacy except in His dhikr, while maintaining His ordinances and preferring Him to others. Then this, this is the true love for ALLAH (muhibb).

Junayd said, "I heard Al-Harith Al-Muhasibar say: "Love (mahabbah) is your inclination to something with all of your being. Then, your preference to that thing over your own self, your soul and your possessions and wealth. Then, your being in accordance with that thing inwardly and outwardly, privately and publicly. Then, realizing your shortcomings with regards to your love of it."

It was said, "Love (mahabbah) is a fire that burns in the heart. It burns everything other than what the beloved wants from the lover." It was also said, "Nay, it is exerting all efforts in pleasing the beloved. And that could never be so until one no longer sees the 'love' anymore, but only witnesses the beloved." It is mentioned in some of the Hadith Qudsi, "My servant, I am, by your right, a lover of you. So, be you, by my right upon you, a lover of Me."

Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak said, "Whomsoever is given something of love and is not given its equivalent of awe and veneration (khashyah), then he is deceived."

Yahya ibn Muadh said, "A muster seed's amount of love from ALLAH is more beloved to me than seventy years of worship without the love of ALLAH!" Abu Bakr Al-Kattaar said, "An issue concerning love (mahabbah) came up in Makkah during the days of the Pilgrimage. The sheikhs spoke on the matter. Junayd was present and he was the youngest amongst them. So they said to him, 'Give us what you have O Iraqi!' He lowered his head in humility and his eyes shed tears, and he spoke: '(How great is) a slave who has left himself, connected to the dhikr of his Rabb, upholding His rights, witnessing Him with his heart. The lights of His Essence have burned his heart and his drink is pure from the cup of His pure love. If such a one speaks, it is by Allah. If he utters, it is from Allah. If he moves, it is by the command of Allah. If he remains silent, he is with Allah. So he is by Allah, for Allah and with Allah.' So the sheikhs cried and said, 'There is nothing that can be added to this. May Allah rectify you, O Taj Al-a arifarn (crown of those who know Allah)!'"

It was said that Allah revealed to Dawud, peace be upon him, "O Dawud, I have made it prohibited (haram) for the hearts to contain the love of Me and the love of others at the same time."

Those who know Allah (the arifaun) have all agreed that love is not acceptable without compliance (with the Sacred Law), so much so that some of them said,"The reality of love for ALLAH is being in accordance with what beloved wants, concerning what pleases him and what makes him angry." The People (of the Science of Purification; Al-Qawm) have also agreed that love is not acceptable without Tawheed (belief in the Oneness of Allah).

The Scholar of the Heart: Ibn Al-Qayyim

Sa'ad bin Abee Waqqaas said: I said, "Ya Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) ! , Who are the most afflicted of all people? He replied, "The Prophets, then the righteous people, then those who are nearest to them in perfection and those who are nearest to them. Man is tested according to the strength of his religion. If he is strong in religion, his test is increased; and if he is weak in religion, his test is reduced. And a believer will be tested until he walks on the earth sinless" – [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim was an Imaam of the Sunnah who was trialed greatly, enduring years of imprisonment and punishment. Yet, he remained the pietist and scholar of the heart whose works and wisdom live on today and remain amongst the most cherished of all spiritual works.

This short piece is dedicated to one of his finest works, Rawdat Al-Muhhibeen wa Nuzhat Al-Mushtaaqeen. May Allah have mercy on him, grant us his company in the hereafter and incline us towards his guidance.

The Garden of the Lovers

What is Love?

'True devotion is total submission of The Heart,Mind, body and soul to One Love ALLAH!.' – Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim.
Love is the divine endowment unto humanity for ALLAH and His creation, a serum of the soul's passion and the niche of the heart's innermost light. It is what flows with ease and sets at the scene of a long-winded aspiration, remaining in the deepest streams of life. Like a first breath, it comes with cherished sacredness and does not cease until death overcomes life. And though sometimes heavy on the tongue and rigid to handle with the bare hands, it can dominates the conscious and the subconscious of every creature.
Love for the sake of Allah is the sweetest of what hearts may share and what souls may weave together and what the Mind thinks of . Its revered path brings its people to burying the world's maladies and to searching, with a vigorous and unrelenting certitude, unto the life of the hereafter. And at its absolute finest, though rare, it is obsessive and endures what nothing else may endure; by it, the world and its enormity is evaded for a passion of pulsating innocence and purity which cannot be found elsewhere.
However, Love of Allah in the hearts of the Muslims people is the pinnacle of all affection and the most celebrated of attainment. This love is not tainted by the alteration of mood or the setting of the night and day; rather, it is latent and imminent in awaiting its resplendent resurrection. And unlike the love of mankind which requires bridges of introduction and intimacy, the love of Allah requires nothing but the removal of internal obstacles, one after the other, such that equitable faith and abounding peace may reside in the hearts of the Muslims people.
And whilst some deem the intoxication of wine and the vertigo of dance as the subject of comparison, The love of Allah does not delude, rather it awakens and revives, rejuvenate the heart, the mind and Soul. This love endows with great confidence and gift, such that the blame of the blamers and the fire of the trial are extinguished from the believer's essence. And unlike love of creation, which craves evolving deed to satisfy changing need, the love of the creator pushes forward whilst remaining still; it is sufficient to worship Him as He told us to, and the heart will push forward on its own accord and not betray.
What is the Garden?
'In this world, man finds in the remembrance of Allah, praising Him and worshipping Him, a delight that is incomparable to anything else.' – Imaam Ibn Taymiyyah
A garden is what retains natural wealth but craves nurturing and the removal of obstacles, eventually serving as a bastion of joy and canopy of shade. And such is the love of Allah that it cannot except be compared with the luminous garden, for the love of Him is engrained in the intuitive sense of every human being and amounts to a wealth which cannot thrive except through the nurturing of a committed servant.
In the garden, though of great expanse, there is no need for fervour and loudness. All that takes place does so in the form of silent whisper, beyond the knowledge of those have no need in what happens. It is like the case of two whose inherent love is deep, whose hearts have fused at the root, for what the glances speak cannot be known except by the beholder of the other's love. Similarly, the lyrics and utterances of a worshipper emanate from his heart and his worship in solitude, beyond the comprehension of a foreigner.
But to merely pass through this garden and merely adore its gateway is not sufficient. Nor is it fitting to look upon it with expectation, for this garden is neither the right of a prince nor the court of a queen, but the tilth of the destitute slave who retains humble love. The hand which cannot endure the thorns, through humility and patience, cannot reach for the elusive fruits and strive upon the earth with perseverance and purpose.
The most elusive fruit of this garden is letting the ego relinquish life at the junction of prostration. It is to relegate the nobility of mankind to utter humiliation and poverty before Allah. It is to cry in submission of all affairs unto Him, to be pleased with His judgement and long for His company, His nearness. It is to arise from prostration with such vigour and certainty, that even poverty and blindness are deemed an endless mercy.
The Excursion of Those Who Yearn
What is Yearned?
The transient shades of life do not retain the springs of satisfaction. Rather, the eternal soothing and grandeur is found in what lies beyond the grave and aloft the heavens. The abundant good is in a sea of white, Light(Nur) upon heaven's hills, by an elixir that renews existence, the scent of which quakes the heart's innermost chambers. Only then and there will the insatiable thirst of the righteous be quenched; on that day the chosen few affirm the truth which was foretold in their hearts and written between their hands by virtue of Allah's words: 'Verily, we have given you Al-Kawthar...'
The springs, gardens and groves of paradise are the resting place of those who yearn for the nearness of ALLAH. Therein is the beginning of an honoured life, tempered by a perpetual bliss of existence, endowed with a reality unto which there is neither a like nor a similitude. Every moment in it is a crest and crescendo of time, a delightful and upward abyss of wonder and perfection. And as the first abode of humanity, in it is not only all that a soul desires, but the overwhelming joy of returning to ALLAH, the Majesty of the Heavens and Earth, carved for the righteous who endure in His name.
What our Rabb says is the absolute truth and what He promises will come to pass; He who knows the truth of the Qur'an knows that the reality of reward in the hereafter is more honest than the eyes which see these very words. And it is only befitting that He who raised the sky without pillars is capable of raising blessed souls to heights reserved to bliss which no mind or tongue has known description of.
It is only fitting that He, in His absolute and eternal majesty, reward those who love Him and do not associate with Him anything. That those who strive upon the earth and sacrifice of their lives, time and wealth for His sake attain the stations of reward and bliss.
An Excursion
Aspiration
From the first steps towards a more profound acquaintance of Allah's essence begins with aspiration to His closeness. To aspire is to will in succeeding and intending the abode of Ar-Ridwaan (good pleasure); to strive upon the earth as if every deed and act is correlated directly to one's meadows in the gardens of paradise.
Sincerity
Another of the stations is that of sincerity, where the realms of monotheism are applied in their true nature and all worship and praise is to Allah alone. It is to single Allah out, from amongst all that exists, and to dedicate the seeking unto Him alone; all besides Him is finite and bound to weakness and death, except He in whose hands our very existence is.
Wonder
Another of the stations is that of knowledge, which is between delving into His words and wondering at the majesty of His creation. The heart which knows wonder is cleansed of arrogance, for it comes to know of its inherent weakness and smallness, thereby vacating the beholder of self-love and opening him for the love of Allah alone.
Acquaintance
Developing gnosis and acquaintance of Allah is to seek the stations in knowing Him. The more His Majesty is engrained upon the heart, the deeper the love of Him; the soul cannot except surrender as it comes to further Ma'rifah (acquaintance) of Allah, for He is eternally majestic and beloved to the intuitive interplays of love, hope and fear within the created human.
Righteous Company
The people of ALLAH are known and easy to differentiate from the people of desires. Their mere presence leaves a mark on the heart, taking their brethren and friends to the peak of truth and faith. They possess what none besides them has of certainty, love and patience; one who accompanies them comes to love the hereafter through them, and love the worship of Allah in living with them.
Perseverance
The self plays with the believer's heart, and is only allowed to overcome it at moments of weakness. To persevere is to understand the desire's strength and deny it leverage over one's life. The prophets were the most perseverant of men, and the greatest amongst them. This station is attained when one arouses a grand objective and is willing to strive for it; and there is no aim loftier than Allah's Love and His eternal reward in the next life.----------------

O Muslim people! We should follow the Sunnah of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) and keep the company of those who devote themselves to Islam and remember ALLAH day and night, for this will make us steadfast in Islam. Even Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) was commanded to keep such company; Says Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) on this subject: Shall I Tell you a thing by which you can attain good in this world and the Hereafter? Remember, it is the company of those who remember and Glorify ALLAH day and Night. Now it is up to us to search for and to recognize the True Lovers of ALLAH and these are the true followers of the Sunnah,For ALLAH has sent His beloved Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) as a model for the guidance of the Muslim and mankind!—The Holy Quran says(3:31) Ya Nabi(sallallahu alayhi wa salam)! say; If you people(really) love ALLAH, Then follow me; so that ALLAH will love you, and will pardon your sins; and ALLAH is forgiving, Most Merciful."-- Therefore, whoever follows Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) faithfully is nearer to ALLAH! And whoever does not follow him is far away from ALLAH! And cannot win His favours! The commentators of the Holy Quran have written that whoever claims to be a Lover of ALLAH! But does not follow the Sunnah of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) , he is a liar: for it is a requisite of Love that everything associated with the beloved must be loved. O Muslim people! We find in today’s world, people pretending to be lovers of ALLAH! And yet they do not obey His commandments! And this is a strange practice! If we as Muslims people were really true lovers of ALLAH! We would never disobey Him! For a lover always follows the orders of his Beloved!" Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)said "All my followers will enter Paradise, but not those who have denied me." The Sahaba said: Who would deny you?" He (Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)said: those who follow me would enter Paradise, but those who disobey me, they in fact deny me! In another Hadith, Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)has said, No one of you can be a true Muslim unless his wishes are subordinate t that which I have brought, And that is The Holy Quran! In this day and time one can hardly believe that those who claim to be followers of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) and claim to be Muslims would disobey ALLAH and Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)openly! When we say that such and such a thing is against the Sunnah! They feel very annoyed and frowned! Then how can they be among the followers of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)? Saadi(Rehmatullah alaih) has said: Whoever treads a path contrary to the Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), he will never reach his destination!" Therefore, whoever keeps the company of the true lovers of ALLAH! The true Believing Muslim people! The followers of the Sunnah, in order to obtain Spiritual benefits, They will certainly progress towards their eventual entrance to heaven. On this particular subject Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)said Whenever you people pass through the Gardens of Paradise, partake of their fruits." The Sahabahs asked What are the Gardens of Paradise? Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) answered The assemblies wherein Knowledge of Islam and The Holy Qur'an is taught! Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) Also said: Luqmaan instructed his son in these words, Keep the company of Scholars and listen attentively to the words of the wise, for therewith ALLAH revives the dead Hearts, just as He revives the dead Earth with heavy rains and the wise alone understand the Din ( religion). A Sahabi asked Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) "Who can be the Best companion for us? He(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) answered Such a person that, when you see him, you remember ALLAH! When you listen to him, your knowledge of Islam is increased! And When you see his Actions, you are reminded of the life Hereafter!" Again,"the Most devoted servants of ALLAH are such that, when you see them you remember ALLAH!" ALLAH says in The Holy Quran: O You who believe! Fear ALLAH! And be with the Truthful(Faithful)people!---- Many of the commentators have written that by "Truthful" are meant the (Siddiq)’, (the truthful people) And the true lovers of ALLAH, for whoever attaches himself to them and listens to their talk ! he attains very high standards of Spirituality. Know that the word truthfulness is used in six ways (meanings), truthfulness in speech, truthfulness in intention and desire, truthfulness in determination, truthfulness in loyalty with determination, truthfulness in action, truthfulness in the realisation of all the stations of the religion.” Being truthful is intrinsic to faith because faith is described as affirmation on the tongue with sincerity in the heart. Without truthfulness a person faith is just empty words. Its truthfulness that brings those words to life. We cannot get rid of the evil desires of ourselves, though we may strive for t for our whole life's unless our desires are subjected to the Commandments of ALLAH and the Sunnah of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam). So when we find a true Lover of ALLAH! we should serve him well and follow his instructions very carefully and try to obey him in our spiritual and Din(religious)matters,So that he may help us on the right path and take and show us how to get nearer to ALLAH! Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)"has said when a group of people remember ALLAH in a meeting, then the Angels surround that gathering, And ALLAH's Mercy descends on them and ALLAH remembers them in the assembly of the Angels!" What honor can be Greater for the Believers than that ALLAH remembers and appreciates them? Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) has also said 'An Angel is sent to those who remember ALLAH sincerely and He(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)says ALLAH has forgiven your past sins and has converted your bad deeds into Good ones! In another Hadith, Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) says: Any assembly of Muslims, who do not remember ALLAH!{do not} send salutations to His Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam), will face disappointment on the Day of Judgement!" There is a Dua((Prayer) of Hadhrat Dawood(Alayhi salam) in these words, O ALLAH! If You see me neglecting the assembly of those who remember You! and attending the assembly of transgressors, then break my feet (that I may not be able to walk towards them!) Abu Hurairah(radhiyallaho anho)says An assembly wherein ALLAH is remembered and Glorified, shines for the Heavenly creatures, just as the stars shine for the Earthly creatures. Once, Hadhrat Abu Hurairah(Radhiyallaho anho) went to a bazaar and proclaimed to the people: "O Brethren! You are sitting here, and the legacy of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)is being distributed in the Masjid." The people ran to the Masjid, but as nothing material was being distributed there, they returned disappointed. Hadhrat Abu Hurairah(Radhiyallaho anho) asked them. After all what was being done there?" They answered: A few people were reading The Holy Qur'an and a few other were engaged in Praising and Glorifying ALLAH." He said: This is what we call the legacy of Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)." Imam Ghazali(Rahmatullah alaih)has mentioned many similar traditions. Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) has been commanded by ALLAH! Ya Rasulullah! Keep the company of those who pray to ALLAH every morning and evening and they desire only His pleasure; and do not turn your eyes from them to the attractions and adornment of the worldly life, and do not follow him whose heart We have turned away from our remembrance, and who follows his desires, and (therefore)he has broken the limits of true Din(of the true religion). Many Hadith indicate that Rasulullah(Sallallahu alayhi wa salam)used to thank ALLAH for producing such pious people among His followers that He was commanded to avoid the company of those who are slaves of passion and trespass the limits laid down by ALLAH! He has been instructed again and again not to follow their vain desires! Now all those who blindly follow the ways of the unrighteous and transgressing people of the Non-believing Nations should search their Hearts, their minds and their Souls and see how far they are from Islam and how far they are from true belief ? Their imitating the pagans , the Christian and Jews has taken them deep into the darkness of ignorance and far away from the right Path!---------
